Failing Forward
“if you do what you can with what you have,
where you are , then God won’t leave you where you are,
He will increase you”—Bill Purns.
Failure can be defined as a lack of success. It can also refer to an unsuccessful person or thing, non-performance, breaking down or ceasing to function. It is the most dreaded enemy of anyone who desires to succeed. Undeniably, everyone desires to succeed and nobody wants to fail. The philosophical truth, however is that success and failure almost always go together like Siamese twins.
There are many ways to be a winner, but there is only one way to be a loser and that is to fail and not look beyond the failure. Many youngsters today think more of failure than they do of success, which is ominous. If you are afraid of failure, it becomes very difficult to succeed, because the ensnaring thoughts of failure becloud your mind.
Interestingly, there are ways to surmount this dreaded enemy of ours or rather fail forward towards your goal. Many today, fail, fall and never rise again. This makes them lean more towards being total failures. But failing, falling and rising again makes you fail forward towards your goal in life. You might have heard several times that falling down doesn’t actually make you a failure, but staying down does, because it’s a way of saying I have been broken and for that reason I am going to cease functioning. Going by scriptural truths, you have the grace to fall and rise seven times in a season of time. The fall implied here is synonymous to failure. Some have not even failed once yet they are afraid of failure, while some have failed once or twice, and they are afraid of trying again just because they want to avoid been ridiculed by the people around. This is not the right approach to life.
The fear of failure is the greatest single obstacle to success in adult life. You must strive never to allow failure become an option in your quest for success. If at all you happen to fail, regard it as the price you have to pay for progress. If you can do that, you will put yourself in a better position to fail forward. To fail forward, you must also be able to pass the persistence test. Persistence is the iron quality of character, which is essential for good success. Persistence is absolutely indispensable, because it goes hand in hand with all great success in life. It is the continuous effort you put towards achieving your goal in spite of obstacles or inconveniences.
Another tool which is very useful in failing forward towards your goal is to aim at freeing your mind from the limitations of the memories of past failure. Reminiscing on failures of the past should not be an option in your life, because these thoughts could weigh you down. According to Bill Newman, a reputable motivational writer, it is easier to lie on a couch digging into the past, than to sit on a chair facing the future. He asserts that preoccupation with the past is a retreat, advising thus; “be careful with those memories of the past, they can trap you in mud and make you incapable of moving forward. Invest your time thinking positively, it’s the source of power.
Finally, you must learn how to manage failure in your life and maintain flexibility of approach so that success can be yours. If you don’t believe that failures are meant for your benefit, you will be held captive by mediocrity. ALWAYS BELIEVE YOU CAN.
